Black & Indigenous Doulas Search Feature

In order to reduce barriers for Black and Indigenous/Aboriginal families looking specifically for Black and Indigenous/Aboriginal doulas, we added an additional search option on our More Search Options page.  Families can now search for Black and Indigenous doulas who serve their geographic location.

Why an option for finding Black and Indigenous/Aboriginal doulas?  DoulaMatch.net recognizes that our history of slavery and colonialism continues to show up today, as evidenced by significant maternal health inequities, most harmfully, for Black and Indigenous/Aboriginal people.  Racism is the root cause for maternal mortality discrepancies.

Black and Indigenous/Aboriginal doulas can provide cultural congruence, familiarity and similarity that can help buffer the effects of overt racism and inherent bias that Black and Indigenous/Aboriginal families routinely experience in our medical institutions.  To learn more about how this works, please see this report, this article and this study

Special thanks to Denise Bolds at https://www.bolddoula.com/ and https://doulamatch.net/profile/8954/denise-bolds-msw-cd-dona-clc  Denise was the first person who asked us to add this feature on DoulaMatch in very early 2020. We are grateful for her wisdom and guidance on this upgrade as well as her national leadership and advocacy for Black birthing families.
